The wonderful thing if you’re looking for your first boat for sale is anticipating the freedom that you will soon enjoy, to arrive at some beautiful location or festive event with your own little floating apartment in-tow.

This Saturday my local canal-side pub is doing their usual bonfire and firework display. Full of excitement last year we moored outside The Grand Junction Arms at Bulbourne enjoying hot chocolate and roasted chestnuts before wrapping up the kids and taking them over to the beer garden for their first ever bonfire night. They were at the tender ages of two and four years old. Rather than being filled with delight they buried their faces into our shoulders in terror. They still remember that night and have asked that we do not go to the fireworks again this year please.

But the wonder of boating means that if your kids are old enough (or left home!) you can take your boat to your nearest waterside event. This Saturday there will be a firework display at Gloucester Docks. There will be stalls and refreshments beside the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal and the display will be accompanied by music. Fireworks begin at 7.15pm.

Also on Saturday the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley is hosting a firework-free bonfire night which I’m sure my kids would approve of. Instead, families can enjoy hot roast chestnuts and a fairground. Characters in period costume will be at the museums canal-side village, which will be lit with candle and gas-light.

Cassiobury Park firework display takes place on 5th November near the Grand Union Canal in Watford. There will be two displays (an earlier one for children), a bonfire, entertainment, food and drink. There will also be live music and the first display is at 6.15pm.

Perhaps when the kids are in bed I can watch some fireworks on the telly?
