For some years an original Bob Spalding speedboat has remained in a Suffolk barn. amazingly apart from requiring some renovation to her decks nonetheless she is in all respects complete. Bob himself needs no introduction of course, this charismatic driver dominated the formula one speedboating world throughout the eighties and was world champion. Full details of Bobs achievements can be found at http://www.fastonwater.co.uk/bob_spalding.html. Having won the 1985 World Championship at the season’s penultimate Grand Prix, Bob unfortunately suffered head injuries during a crash in practice for the Seville Grand Prix. Although he recovered, he was advised to give up racing, as another similar accident could be fatal.
Bob died of a brain aneurysm in 1997. It is not clear whether this was caused by the accident at Seville. Bobs connections with Suffolk are familial and it is appropriate that IF this is indeed one of his boats that should be rediscovered within a few miles of his home. Those of us that are attracted to renovations and projects would be hard pushed to find a more satisfying project. The current owner is in effect donating her as her asking price is token. It is important that should her provenance be proved this barn find could be both historic and valuable.
